Jihad - One Of Those Misunderstood Words With A New Meaning - Holy War

What images does the word Jihad bring to mind?

Not pleasant!  Right?

Before 911, I never heard of the word Jihad, but it's been around for centuries.

An Islamic term for important religious duties of Muslims, refered as the sixth pillar of Islam with no official title. In Arabic it translates to "struggle" In Islam, it refers to the—inner (spiritual) outer (physical)—struggle against the infidels (non-believers) The inner often called "greater" refers to the stuggle to fulfill religious duties (non-violent) and the physical called "lesser" against the enemies of Islam. (violent and non-violent) from which we get "Holy War" with military aspirations.

One of those misunderstood words, with a new meaning. Misunderstood as meaning "Holy War"

It appears 41 times in the Quran as an expression to strive in the way of God, intended originally for nearby neighbours of Muslims but has changed in time as enemies of the Muslims grew.

Jihad in Indonesia consider the word to mean, "sacrificing one's life for the sake of Islam/God/a just cause, a duty toward God, a divine duty, worship.

What it should mean:

  • working hard, achieving goals
  • achieving a noble cause
  • promoting peace, harmony and assisting others
  • living on the principles of Islam

Why would a word like Jihad, cause such fear in people?

Unfortunately, there is something called

Radical Islam and infiltration which brings a new definition to the word Jihad.
